Runway 14/32

Runway 14/32
Somerville suffering a sharp increase in jet noise.

Posted by JimmyMorse.com on Aug 31, 2010, 1:14 PM EST in Runway 14/32

In September of 2001 I was fighting MassPort's proposed runway 14/32 at Logan Airport and working with Communities Against Runway Expansion CARE.

CARE, along with the South Shore Jet Pollution Council, had filed a lawsuit in Federal Court attempting to stop the proposed runway 14/32. Judge Margot Botsford's ruling on 11/18/2003 cleared the way for the controversial runway. CARE disbanded.

I had written letters to Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry asking them to oppose the runway. Sen. Kennedy did not respond and Sen. Kerry sent me a letter dated 9/11/01 saying that there were a lot of factors to consider.

I also offered to be the City of Medford representative with the CARE group and I was told, "There is a long list of potential appointees."

No one from Medford was ever appointed to this group.

The battle over Runway 14/32 began at Wood Island Park, when MassPort took all the homes on Neptune Road and Lovell Street including my grandfather's house.

If you are currently experiencing jet noise, "You may also call Massport's Noise Complaint Line, at (617) 561-3333. This line is staffed by Massport's Noise Abatement Office from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on business days," and you can obtain more info at MassPort Noise Monitoring.
